Blaeu replica, 1850 Diam. 50 cm, total height 90 cm. Probably approx. 1850. A 19th century reproduction of Blaeu globe. The globe is made of twelve hand coloured gores. An impressionistically reproduction of Willem Jansz. Blaeu. The meridian, eclipse and equator are graduated but not numbered, the oceans with sea monsters, wind roses, cartouches and small images of sailboats. The globe is very heavy and attached with its iron meridian to the wooden base. The meridian is papered and graduated on both sides. On the wooden horizon the houses of the zodiac are shown (the paper is damaged on a few places). The wooden horizon is raised on four turned wooden legs. The globe has a nice patina and is in a good shape.
A similar globe is described in Globi Neerlandici , van der Krogt, Peter, 522-533, BLA V: Probably Venetian and 19th century. The last few years some of the reproductions have come to light, particularly in Italy. The gores are not printed but hand coloured from a hand drawn original. At the Portuguese Embassy in Rome there was a similar globe present when Portugal bought the house from a wealthy family at the end of the first world war. SOLD |
